New Year’s resolutions are lame!  I’ve gotta be honest, I am not a fan of resolutions because they are typically unrealistic and unattainable.  Folks are setting themselves up for failure on the onset.  I’ll tell ya one thing though, I love this time of year for so many reasons and one of those is planning for the year to come.  Instead of creating resolutions, I set goals.  Goal setting is important for attaining your financial goals, fitness goals, business goals and personal goals to name a few. Goals are intentional, well thought out and focused.  Resolutions are typically quick generalizations folks make at the beginning of the year.  Take the time to set some intentional goals and set yourself up for success.  Here’s a guide to set some goals for the coming year and some epic tools to help you along the way.

  1. Think BIG!! When it comes to goal setting, you’ve got to start big. Think about the big goal(s) you want to be accomplished within the next 5-10 years.  Then, brainstorm what you need to accomplish in 2018 to achieve that big goal.  Give yourself permission to think BIG.  Goals should push you to new levels to achieve great things.  Maybe you want to be a millionaire, maybe you want to move to Africa as a missionary… Whatever it is, think big!!  It’ll be worth it!

  2. Make em SMART!! You should always set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.  Setting SMART goals will ensure that achieving the goal is actually possible.  An example of a SMART goal is “I will pay off $30k of my debt by the end of 2018.”  Depending on the person setting it, that goal fits the criteria of a SMART goal. By staying with the guidelines of a smart goal, you’ll surely set yourself up for success!

  3. Create a plan! Once you set your smart goals, it’s time to make a plan.  What actionable steps do you need to take in order to achieve your goal(s)? Maybe you need to create a monthly budget, create to-do lists, sell some items around your home?  Try to think of the simpler things you can do quickly to make traction on your goals.  Give yourself some little wins to build momentum.  Then, think outside of the box.  What could you do that is unique to you to achieve your goals? Sometimes these out of the box ideas will make a huge impact and even help you grow as a person.

  4. Measure your progress! If you want to pay off $30k in debt next year, a great way to measure your progress is to understand what you need to accomplish monthly.  By mid-year, you’ll know if you’re on track or if you need to adjust and increase intensity.  Side note – If you’re killing your goal, don’t slow down!!! If you’re on track to pay of $60k in debt next year, keep crushing it!!!  There is absolutely nothing wrong with over-achieving your goals!

  5. Celebrate your wins! This is HUGE!! Setting and achieving goals can be hard.  You’re probably going to have to sacrifice and you might look a little weird to those around you.  It’s important that you celebrate your success, big and small! Make yourself an ice cream sundae or something and celebrate!

  6. Get an accountability partner! This is critical to your success.  You have got to find someone to hold you accountable to your goals.  My husband holds me accountable for our money and personal goals and I’ve joined a group of three other ladies to hold me accountable to my business goals.  Not only can we all cheer each other on, help each other celebrate but we will help each other stay focused and on track.  I cannot wait!

  7. Find some tools to help you! I am so excited for 2018 because I will be using The Ultimate Intentional Goal Planner by Cultivate What Matters, otherwise called PowerSheets!  I seriously cannot wait to start using these bad boys.  The PowerSheets will not only help you set your goals but will help you achieve them!!  They are laid out to help you pull out of your heart what you really want and need to achieve and set an action plan to actually achieve it.  Here are a few sneak peaks at what’s inside.  Click here to snag your PowerSheets and set your 2018 up for success!

I will also be using the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley.  This planner will coincide nicely with the PowerSheets because I can make a daily and hourly to do list to help me stay organized and achieve my goals.  My big picture items will be laid out in the monthly portion of the planner.  Bring on the organization!!!  See below pictures for a sneak peek at what you get when you order.  Both the Planner and PowerSheets are absolutely gorgeous too!  Can you tell I’m excited to get started?  Click here to buy the Simplified Planner and get to organizing your 2018!

One more thing to keep in mind, if your goals don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough!!!  Now, I’m not saying to set something unrealistic… remember the SMART goals above.  But if you think of a goal that gives you butterflies, set it and go after it with your whole heart!!  Those scary goals are often the game changers, the ones that change you and your life for the better.  You can do it, I believe in you!

My sincere hope for you is that 2018 is your best year yet.  May you achieve great health, financial and personal success!  What goals are you cooking up for the New Year?

Until next time, spend safely!

  1. #3 and #4 are very important!
Most people set these goals, but they never have any idea of how they are going to achieve them? Breaking them down into smaller ones and (#4) then tracking your progress to see your results is a very huge step in the goal achievement process.

Best of luck in 2018, God Bless!
